The history of World Environment Day (WED) dates back to 1972. In the conference held by the United Nations for the first time on environmental issues and human in Sweden, the UN assembly adopted a resolution called UNEP (United Nation Environment Program). This annual event, celebrated on June 5, is a day chosen by United Nations to not only uplift public awareness about the protection of the environment, but also make them to deal with environmental degradation and biological species.
In 2020, WED concentrates on Biodiversity. This year the theme is Celebrate Biodiversity.
"With 1 million species facing extinction, there has never been a more important time to focus on BIODIVERSITY."
Biodiversity contains variation of earth’s terrestrial, freshwater and marine species and their habitats. It supplies us with food, water and resources as well as different services. Every living organism has a positive role in maintaining balance in the ecosystem. In ecosystems all parts from the smallest bacteria to the largest vertebrate are interconnected. Some smaller provide food for larger one, some produce oxygen for others to breathing. Eventually, you can lose more one species by destroying one element and more than 98% of the species in the wild extinct.
All in all, Environment Day is Time for Nature and it has a major role in supporting life on earth and human development. This day, people need to do something to protect the environment.
