In 1941, November 17th has been designated as International Student’s Day by the International Students Council in London. Yet, how many of you know the significance of International Students Day? Or that there is a tragic story behind its historical background?
Students are the future and among the most important members of each society. Therefore, each year, this day is celebrated all around the world with a special focus on ensuring education is available and accessible to all students regardless of gender, race, origin, age, or beliefs.
The tragic background goes back to the events that unfolded in Prague during World War II. On November 17, 1939, nine students were executed without trail and over 1200 students were sent to concentration camps by the Nazi troops. Moreover, all the Czech colleges and universities had been closed by them. The students has displayed an unforgettable courage during this incident. To commemorate their legacy, since 1941, November 17 has been started celebrating as the International Students Day by students from all corners of the globe.
Definitely, there is no denying that international students face a number of challenges that local student may have not faced. Homesickness, cultural differences, financial troubles, and language barriers are just some of the challenges.
