MD Program

MD Program Overview

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) is a comprehensive and prestigious medical program, typically completed in 7 years, designed to train highly competent and compassionate medical practitioners. This rigorous program aims to provide students with a deep, holistic understanding of the scientific foundations of medicine, coupled with extensive clinical mastery. It emphasizes the development of advanced professional ethics, exceptional communication skills for patient-centered care, and a strong commitment to evidence-based lifelong learning. Throughout this program, students transition from foundational sciences to high-level clinical decision-making, preparing them to diagnose, manage, and prevent complex medical conditions and emergencies in diverse and challenging healthcare settings.

A key difference between the MD and MBBS programs lies in the length and depth of the clinical phase of training: while MBBS programs require a 2-year clinical phase, the MD program necessitates 5 years of extensive clinical experience, encompassing the Studentship, Externship (Clerkship), and Internship (Pre-internship) stages.

Educational Program Features and Structure

MUI is committed to providing an advanced, world-class curriculum and dedicated faculty to produce graduates equipped with modern medical knowledge and technology. The International Education Department seeks to enhance the MD program by fostering student involvement in clinical policy-making and focusing on core medical competencies, including advanced clinical skills, patient care, and professional ethics. Through hospital-based and community-integrated education, the center aims to improve global health outcomes by preparing medical scholars who engage deeply with societal healthcare needs.

The MD program is structured to provide an immersive education in both medical theory and extensive clinical practice. You can check Course Plans.

MD Program Regulations

Since the academic regulations outline critical aspects of medical education at MUI, students must thoroughly understand all educational MD program rules and regulations, which are provided here.

Duration, and Medium of Instruction

The MD program is a long-cycle undergraduate/graduate program that takes 7 years to complete. The primary language of instruction is English during the foundational phase; however, achieving high proficiency in the Persian language is mandatory. The program begins with a two-year Basic Science phase, taught entirely in English. This is followed by 5 years of clinical training (Studentship, Externship, and Internship), during which the medium of instruction and communication shifts to Persian as students enter ward rotations, emergency rooms, and clinics to interact directly with native patients.

Class and Clinical Location

Students spend the first two years of basic sciences in the Soleimani building and the Faculty of Medicine. Afterward, they transition into the comprehensive clinical, clerkship, and internship phases, where training and rotations are held in MUI’s primary affiliated teaching hospitals and medical centers.
